HAIRLINE is a Hitchcockian comedy spoof about Sidney, a man who is paranoid about losing his hair, although he is still a young man. He and his wife, Carol, are leaving soon on a trip to a college reunion, and Sidney is afraid to appear before his old friends without the full head of hair he once had. Being only a 30 minute film, many of the cues are less than a minute in length, and some are only a few seconds long, but are there because they reinforce either a comic aspect of the moment or Sidney’s perspective of terror at seeing proof of his encroaching baldness.
IN THE BEGINNING was the first in a series of docudramas that were filmed about a Catholic Priest who started an orphanage in the Mexican town of Cuervavaca. The story is tinged with elements of Hebraic music because the father of a young boy was Jewish and owned his own farm land and made it profitable enough to support his wife and son. Greedy men in the town, empowered by their jealousy and anti-Semitism, schemed to steal the land from the man and his family, and ultimately did so by first shooting the man in cold blood in his field and then causing the death of the boy’s mother. Left alone in the world, the young boy took to stealing to survive but was caught in an attempt to steal from the local Catholic church. The pastor, Fr. Bill Wasson, takes the boy in to help him and the police immediately give him several more and thus the orphanage is begun. This first episode had a filmed introduction by actress Helen Hayes who was very supportive of the priest’s efforts to provide a home for orphaned young boys and girls in that region of Mexico.
THE AMAZING AMAZON was a short documentary about the deforestation happening in the Amazon River region of Brazil, already a disastrous climate issue back in the 1980s. Along with narration, the film used extensive photography of major sections of rain forest being cut down and burned.
GIVE ME A REASON TO LIVE was another of the instructional message films that were produced to provide inspirational guidance to church congregations via meetings and discussions on evenings of the week between Sunday services.
Edward David Zeliff, composer, pianist, arranger, and conductor, completed his Bachelor of Music in Composition at the California Institute of the Arts, and earned his Masters and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in Composition from Claremont Graduate University. He spent many years in the religious, student, and secular film communities composing and conducting scores for short subjects and features, leading studio orchestras in London and Los Angeles. The feature film BEYOND THE NEXT MOUNTAIN, the Biblical documentary THE LIVING WORD, and the prize-winning student film HAIRLINE are notable examples of his work in this medium.
Dr. Zeliff is partnered with Colombian soprano Maria Del Pilar in OPUS 2, a duo dedicated to the creation, discovery and performance of original and exotic repertoire from a variety of genres and styles of music. Dr. Zeliff's catalogue features an extensive collection of choral works that have been performed nationally and internationally by many distinguished ensembles and conductors, including Irene Messoloras, Jean Sébastien Vallée, David Rentz, Bruce Rogers, Stephen Gothold, Michael Culloton, Richard Zielinski, and Phillip Brunelle, directors of the Mountainside Master Chorale, Chorale Bel Canto, Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester (MN), the Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, and VocalEssence. Dr. Zeliff is currently Music Director at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Claremont, California.
